The Executive Commissioner of External Affairs works to develop relationships with state officials and policymakers to improve higher education at NDSU. The commission assists in writing legislation and stays informed about various issues. The commissioner also attends State Board of Higher Education and Interim Higher Education Funding Committee meetings to stay informed on information regarding the North Dakota University System and will testify on NDSU’s behalf when needed. The executive also organizes NDSU's involvement in the North Dakota Student Association (NDSA) by being the head delegate. 

The Executive Commissioner of Legislative Affairs (LA) is the partner position to External Affairs. The LA commisioner is responsible for advocating for student interest at the North Dakota Legislature.
