Natural Resources Management Club

The NRM Club hopes to enrich the college experience for students who are interested in management of natural resources by providing opportunities for social interaction, service, personal and professional development along with career contacts. The Natural Resources Club does various volunteer and service projects these being: building bird houses, maintaining a native prairie planting on campus, monitoring species on Minnesota DNR lands, and doing outreach with groups like the Audubon Society, River Keepers, and The Nature Conservancy in the area. The club has informational meetings on jobs and careers along with providing students a social organization for fun activities such as hikes, camping, cookouts, and getting outside. Undergraduate Research

All undergraduate students are encouraged to do research projects. Prior research studies have monitored plants species of concern on Minnesota DNR lands, effects of certain plant species on grassland restorations, using native wetland plants for biomass energy, and using native plants as deterrents to grazing on reclamations. Students have competed in the Innovation Challenge on campus where innovative ways have developed to utilize natural resources to provide a social good.
 

Project Learning Tree (PLT) Certification

As part of the NRM 421/621 Environmental Education and Outreach course students complete a free PLT certification and receive resources to use in their future career to teach K-12 students about trees. This is done in conjunction with PLT and the North Dakota Forest Service.
 

Project WET Certification

During the spring semester as part of the NRM 421/621 Environmental Education and Outreach course students are given the option to take a 6 hour workshop to obtain Project WET certification and resources. This is done in conjunction with Project WET and the North Dakota State Water Commission.
 

Eco-Education

Students are able to take part in environmental education opportunities for kids and adults in the area. Interested students help put on an environmental day at a local elementary school for approximately 200 students. Additionally they can volunteer at events like the Red River Water Festival that teaches approximately 2,500 area 4th graders about water each year.
 

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Students are offered a variety of volunteer opportunities that they can participate in during their time at NDSU related to the NRM major and as part of the NRM club. Some examples include volunteering for the Minnesota DNR, the NRCS, cleaning up the Red River, and many more
