Research Interests

Pamela Emanuelson received a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of South Carolina in 2008.  Her research areas include small group processes, social psychology and mathematical  sociology.

Additional interests include economic sociology, sociopolitical evolution and social organization. Her dissertation research formulated and tested theoretical models that predict the direction and magnitude of power exercise from social structure. In that work she brings together social psychological theories of exchange, coercion and conflict with theories of status, collective action and legitimacy. The model has experimental support. She continues to work on new theoretical derivations with the goal of increasing the scope and precision of contemporary exchange theory. One developing project looks at the beliefs that actors develop after interacting in structures where information is limited. This project will be part of a larger effort that examines the role of information in the control and manipulation of interaction outcomes in social structures.  Her on-going research examines the efficacy of coercion under differing structural conditions.

Currently, she is editor of the Mathematical Sociologist, the newsletter for the Mathematical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association.
