What You Can Learn

Programs

With a vibrant major and minor program, the Visual Arts Department brings together students from every college in the University. As a primary career specialization, or as a supplement to some other major field, art and design is one of the most versatile areas of study. Housing in one of the finest facilities in the upper Midwest for art and design, the department is home to eight professional artists who teach every class we offer. We are an undergraduate program only, and are focused on the individual attention, modest class sizes and high quality advising for our undergraduate students.

Bachelor of Art/Science (Graphic Design and Studio Arts)

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS) requires 51 hours in art with an emphasis in one of the following: graphic design, painting, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography or drawing. The BA also requires a competency in a foreign language through the intermediate level and the BS degree requires a minor in another discipline.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Graphic Design and Studio Arts)

Students majoring in art have several degree options. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is the professional degree requiring 72 hours in art with an emphasis in one or a combination of the following: graphic design, painting, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, photography or drawing.

Bachelor of Science (Apparel, Retail Merchandising and Design)

We prepare students to be problem solvers and leaders who create and manage products, people, services, and experiences for the global marketplace.

Bachelor of Art Education

Art Education is offered as a Bachelor of Science Degree in collaboration with the NDSU School of Education. Art Education candidates take all of the same studio classes as studio arts majors pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Instead of taking classes towards a minor in another discipline, students take professional education courses in the School of Education. Upon completion of this program, Art Education candidates are eligible for teacher licensure in Visual Art with Accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAAD), The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and approval by the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board (ESPB).

Master of Science (Merchandising)

A master’s degree in merchandising will help you deliver the right product or service to the consumer in the right place, in the right quantities, at the right time and the right price.
