Loveland Scholarship
Laurie Loveland (BA, NDSU, 1980) was a lawyer instrumental in drafting and negotiating the Master Settlement Agreement between the nation’s tobacco companies and 46 states, five US territories and the District of Columbia. She also served as Assistant Attorney General and Solicitor General for the State of North Dakota and as a Supreme Court Fellow.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Laurie Loveland was an advocate for women's rights, for adult literacy, and a friend and champion of children. She influenced co-workers, friends and family to make the world a better place. One of a truckdriver's seven children, Laurie was an academic star at Minot High School, NDSU and Yale Law School, but she remembered and honored her modest beginnings. This $5000 scholarship proposes to provide funding for North Dakota women who want to make a difference in the world as she did.

Criteria
1. Be properly enrolled as a part or full-time junior, senior or graduate student at North Dakota
State University at the time of disbursement.
2. Graduated from a high school in North Dakota, South Dakota or Minnesota with preference
to those whose graduating class was fewer than 100.
3. Demonstrated experience in leadership and/or service in support of women’s community.
4. Has submitted a 500-word essay on the topic: “Why I am a Feminist.”
5. Has submitted a 250-word essay on the topic: “What are your plans for the future, and how
do you plan to serve the public?”
6. Has provided a list of 1-3 leadership experiences at NDSU that have helped the candidate
prepare for the future.
7. Has successfully completed an oral interview conducted by the committee.
8. Has agreed in writing to allow the Women and Gender Studies (WGS) Program to maintain
contact with the recipient following
