Study Tours

The program offers dynamic study tour opportunities that connect students with the heart of the fashion and retail industries. These immersive experiences bring classroom concepts to life, providing hands-on learning and behind-the-scenes access to some of the world’s leading fashion and retail hubs.

Study tours are offered during the fall or summer semesters each year. As a requirement for Apparel, Retail Merchandising, and Design majors, study tours provide a short-term, off-campus learning experience. Offered approximately once per year, these variable-credit opportunities allow students to gain valuable insights into the industry that extend beyond classroom learning.

Study Tour Highlights

Paris, France

During the 2023 study tour, students explored the heart of global fashion by visiting iconic locations such as the Louvre Museum of Decorative Arts, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and luxury fashion houses. They gained valuable insights into haute couture, fashion history, and international retail trends. Highlights included a walking tour of Parisian boutiques, a workshop at a local design studio, and free time to experience the city’s vibrant culture and style.

Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2018

During a three-day tour, students visited AM Retail Group, Coolibar, Target, and other companies, gaining insights into product development, design, visual merchandising, and retail leadership. They also dined with ARMD alumni, attended Beautiful – The Carole King Story at the Orpheum, and completed a shopping assignment at Edina’s Galleria Mall.

It was a worthwhile tour overall for me. The best parts were hearing from the NDSU alumni, visiting with Target's PD&D and VM teams, and touring smaller companies like Coolibar, Clothier Design Source, and Made for Retail.  ~ Janet Tumanai
