Graduate students promote interest in science and science careers

NDSU graduate students recently hosted an event for local high school students to promote interest in science and science-related careers.
They invited approximately 150 local high school students to campus for a science event called “Avenues of Scientific Discovery.” The grad students led hands-on activities, such as tracking an infectious disease to identify the source and extracting genetic material from a strawberry.
The idea was to show science concepts and the variety of science disciplines and career options.

Director Breanne Steffan and co-directors Kaitlin Dailey and Elliott Welker initiated and planned the event in partnership with NDSU’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education. Steffan is a doctoral student in the Department of Veterinary and Microbiological Sciences. Dailey is a doctoral student in chemistry and biochemistry, and Welker is a doctoral student in genomics and bioinformatics.
NDSU students pursuing graduate degrees in animal sciences, biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, physics, public health, and veterinary and microbiological sciences led the activities.
