NDSU music students place in state competition

The NDSU School of Music announced several students placed during the recent North Dakota Music Teachers National Association state competition, held Oct. 25-26 at Valley City State University, Valley City, N.D.

In the chamber music wind competition, the NDSU Brass Trio received first place. Members of the trio include senior Amy Schaaf, trumpet, from Mandan, N.D.; senior Erika Berger, horn, from Mandan, N.D.; and Neil Erickson, senior in mechanical engineering, trombone, from Rochester, Minn.

The NDSU Woodwind Quintet was named alternate. Quintet members include junior Zachery Pavlicek, clarinet, from Dickinson, N.D.; senior Alyson Hubrig, flute, from Hankinson, N.D.; sophomore Alex Blaser, oboe, from Alexandria, Minn.; senior Devon Tucker, bassoon, from Wadena, Minn.; and Berger.

Pavlicek also received first place in the young artist performance competition, while graduate student Greta Teigen from Nashotah, Wis., was named alternate.

Students prepare with private instructors for the competition, which is held each October at a different university in North Dakota. First place winners advance to the regional competition at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Jan. 10-12, 2014. They will compete against students from Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri.
