NDSU dean honored by materials engineering for resources group

Scott Wood, NDSU dean of science and mathematics, recently received an international award from the Society of Materials Engineering for Resources of Japan. The group recognized Wood during the Seventh International Conference on Materials Engineering for Resources in Akita City, Japan, Nov. 20-22.

Wood’s award reads: “For your eminent activities in theoretical and experimental studies on the thermodynamics, kinetics and molecular mechanisms of aqueous processes and water-rock interactions.”

At the conference, Wood gave an invited plenary lecture, titled “Hydrothermal Mass Transfer of the REE: Insights from Experimental Studies and Active Geothermal Systems.”

Wood, who traveled to Japan Nov. 17-26, also gave lectures to students and faculty at Akita University. In addition, he participated in a field trip that examined the geology of the famous Kuroko copper-lead-zinc deposits, natural hot springs areas, and river and lake geochemistry.

Wood joined NDSU in July 2012. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y., and his master’s degree and doctorate in geology at Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
