Student motivational factors study to be published

A research manuscript by staff of the NDSU Office of Institutional Research and Analysis has been accepted for publication in the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory and Practice.

The peer-reviewed manuscript, “A Longitudinal Cohort Study of Student Motivational Factors Related to Academic Success and Retention Using the College Student Inventory,” was written by William D. Slanger, director; Emily A. Berg, assistant director; and research analysts Paul S. Fisk and Mark G. Hanson.

The researchers looked at 10 years of data from the College Student Inventory to study the role of motivational factors in predicting academic success and college student retention. Academic success was defined as cumulative grade-point average, cumulative course load capacity, cumulative ratio of credits earned to credits taken and retention to subsequent fall semesters through eight semesters of study. The study suggests that the College Student Inventory can play a global role in monitoring over time changing student motivational factors related to college student success.
