The Summit League's Food Fight Challenge scheduled for NDSU athletics will begin Saturday, Feb. 15, with the Bison women's basketball game against Omaha and continue through the NDSU men's basketball game with South Dakota State on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.
Designated Summit League basketball games have been selected with each school having one week to collect food and/or cash donations for The Summit League Food Fight Challenge. At the end of the challenge, the member school that raises the most amount of food, measured in pounds, will be declared the winner.
"It is an opportunity for our students, athletes and members of the NDSU community to help those in need," said Wes Satzinger, president of NDSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and all-Summit League first team second baseman.
Summit League food bags will be passed out during the women's basketball game against Western Illinois Thursday, Feb. 13, for individuals to return filled the following week. Drop boxes will be located at the Bison Sports Arena and at the Memorial Union beginning Saturday, Feb. 15. Donations will be delivered to the Alba Bales House on the campus of NDSU.
"Our local food banks tell us that demand is up and donations are down due to the economy, so every bit of food helps tremendously," said Satzinger, a senior health education major from Andover, Minn. "Besides our commitment, we are pleased to announce that we are going to partner again this year with the NDSU Greek organizations. Together our commitment will make a difference."
Eric McDaniel, InterFraternity Council president and senior civil engineering major from Bismarck, N.D., said, "The NDSU fraternity and sorority life community is excited, as always, to collaborate with fellow campus organizations and departments. The food fight collaboration is a great way for both NDSU athletics, and fraternity and sorority life to give back to a community that is so supportive of both of our organizations.”
