NDSU has scheduled a series of events to mark April’s national Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The activities are part of the overall efforts and resources NDSU Sexual Assault Prevention and Advocacy provides students to actively prevent sexual assault within the NDSU community.
All events are open to the public.
In addition to the following events, throughout the month of April, members of NDSU’s Violence Prevention Educators student group will be stationed in the Memorial Union offering students the chance to sign a pledge committing to prevent violence on campus. The group trains students about sexual and relationship violence and develops prevention and awareness efforts on the NDSU campus.
“Through our assessment we have found that programs are having an impact on students,” said Sarah Dodd, assistant director for sexual assault prevention and advocacy. “Individuals who attended Sexual Assault Prevention and Advocacy programming in the fall became more confident in their ability to intervene in a situation that might lead to violence.”
Tuesday, April 1
Advanced Live Real Mentor Session: Alcohol and Sexual Violence
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m.
Memorial Union Prairie Rose room
Learn about the relationship between alcohol and sexual violence. Social norms regarding sexual behavior and alcohol will be discussed, along with the impact of alcohol on both victims and offenders and the role of alcohol in victim blame. Participants do not need to have previously attended the LIVE REAL Mentor Basics program.
The event is sponsored by Sexual Assault Prevention and Advocacy, NDSU Counseling Center, University Police and Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Programs.

The Hook Up is a facilitated discussion about hooking up, sexual assault and bystander intervention.
The event is sponsored by Campus Attractions Issues and Ideas and Sexual Assault Prevention and Advocacy.

The Clothesline Project: Bearing Witness to Violence Against Women

A reception and T-shirt-making session is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, from 7-8 p.m. at the Memorial Union Gallery.
The Clothesline Project serves as a vehicle for individuals who have been affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as a testimony to the problem of violence against women. There are approximately 500 Clothesline Projects around the world. All of the shirts on display at the gallery are created by NDSU students, faculty and staff.
Attendees also will be able to create a T-shirt.
