Student-athlete receives academic honors

NDSU baseball player Tim Colwell was selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award Wednesday, April 30.
He also was voted to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first-team, announced Thursday, May 1. This is the third Academic All-District honor of his career.

Colwell, a senior outfielder from Shoreview, Minnesota, has a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average through fall 2013. He is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America first team selection and has been named to The Summit League Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, Academic All-League and Distinguished Scholar list each year possible.

To be eligible for the Senior CLASS award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced in March. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through June 9. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series in June. For more information on all the finalists, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.

With his first-team selection, Colwell advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
