Fara Brummer has joined NDSU’s Central Grasslands Research Extension Center as the area Extension livestock systems specialist.

Her expertise includes range and livestock management. Her work at the center near Streeter, North Dakota, will focus on integrating grazing systems and animal production.

"We are excited to have Fara join the staff at Central Grasslands," said Bryan Neville, the center's director.

She is filling a new position, which was identified through the State Board of Agricultural Research and Education's needs assessment process. The North Dakota Legislature provided funding for the position.

"Having Fara located at the center strengthens our ability to reach out and help our livestock producers not only in south-central North Dakota, but her depth of knowledge and experience make our livestock programming efforts stronger across the entire state," said Charlie Stoltenow, NDSU Extension Service assistant director and program leader for agriculture and natural resources.

Brummer earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from State University of New York and a master's degree in animal science, range ecology and management, and agricultural economics from Oregon State University.

For the past 10 years, she has worked for the Oregon State University Extension Service, first as an agricultural agent and most recently as the range and livestock agent for central Oregon. Her focus was on range management and livestock production systems. She also worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to set up livestock care clinics.

Prior to joining the Oregon Extension Service, she spent six years with the Soil and Water Conservation District in The Dalles, Oregon. Before that, she worked for various agencies in the Pacific Northwest, including the Forest Service and Oregon's Department of State Lands.
