NDSU is set to host a livestock judging summer camp May 31-June 2. The camp focuses on the evaluation of swine, sheep and cattle. In addition, campers will learn the proper technique and terminology of oral reasons for judging the three species.

The camp is for youth ages 12-18 with an interest in evaluating livestock, according to organizer Justin Crosswhite, lecturer of animal sciences.

“Livestock judging is an activity that both 4-H club and FFA students participate in, and consists of evaluating breeding and market cattle, swine and sheep,” Crosswhite said, noting he expects approximately 20 individuals to take part. “Participants will not only be able to expand their skills in livestock evaluation, but also their communication skills through practicing oral reasons. The camp also will include a section on genetic selection of livestock through understanding and interpreting ‘Expected Progeny Differences.’ ”

The camp ends June 2 with campers taking part in a judging contest.
