Plant sciences graduate students earn scholarships

Three NDSU plant sciences graduate students earned scholarships from state and national plant science and cereal science associations.

The NDSU College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources named plant sciences master’s student Ryan Buetow as a recipient of the North Dakota Soybean Council Graduate Student Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving graduate student who is involved in research that will benefit the soybean industry. Buetow's adviser is Hans Kandel, Extension agronomist and professor of plant sciences.

Cereal science doctoral student Elena De La Pena received a graduate fellowship for 2014-15, contributed by the American Association of Cereal Chemists International Anheuser Busch/Campbell Fellowship Fund. The purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage graduate research in grain-based food science and technology. De La Pena's adviser is Frank Manthey, durum and pasta quality project leader and professor of plant sciences.

Cereal science doctoral student Ramon Huerta received a graduate scholarship for 2014-15, contributed by the American Society of Brewing Chemists MillerCoors Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are available to society student members pursuing graduate degrees in areas pertinent to brewing science. Huerta's adviser is Paul Schwarz, malting barley quality project leader and professor of plant sciences.
