New dean of the libraries named

Burke

NDSU Provost Beth Ingram has announced that Bridget J. Burke has been named dean of libraries.

Burke most recently was associate university librarian for special collections and the digital library at Boston College. Burke began working at Boston College in 2011.

Previously, she was an assistant professor and department head for the Alaska and Polar Regions Collection at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She also has held positions at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia; American Alpine Club, Golden, Colorado; Colorado Historical Society, Denver; Sterling Library at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; National Museum of American History Library at the Smithsonian Institution; and the New York Public Library.

Burke earned a bachelor’s degree and Master of Library Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Arts in liberal studies from Wesleyan University. (please note: correct information for Burke's degree from Wesleyan University was updated Sept. 16, 2014)

“I grew up in the Midwest so this feels like coming home,” Burke said. “I’m delighted to be back at a land-grant institution. The Libraries are poised to participate in the evolution of NDSU, I’m happy to be part of that.”

She begins work Sept. 15.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
