NDSU to host regional mathematics meeting

The NDSU Department of Mathematics is scheduled to host the Mathematical Association of America North Central Section meeting Sept. 26-27. The event is expected to attract faculty and students from universities and colleges in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Invited speakers include Mark R. Hoffmann, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor at the University of North Dakota, and Paul Zorn, professor of mathematics at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota.

Hoffmann’s research group focuses on theoretical and computational physical chemistry. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University and doctorate at the University of California-Berkeley. Hoffmann was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Chicago and the University of Utah.

Zorn is the former president of the Mathematical Association of America. His paper, "The Bieberbach Conjecture," was recognized with the 1987 Carl B. Allendoerfer Award for mathematical exposition. Zorn earned his bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his doctorate from the University of Washington in Seattle.
