Faculty member discusses ethics of death

Cooley

Dennis Cooley, NDSU professor of philosophy and ethics and Northern Plains Ethics Institute associate director, participated in a recent panel discussion about a new book he co-wrote with Lloyd Steffen, professor of religious studies and chaplain at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The two men discussed their book during a Sept. 24 presentation at Lehigh University.

The book,The Ethics of Death: Religious and Philosophical Perspectives in Dialogue,” examines moral issues people face as they deal with death. It includes chapters on topics ranging from abortion to the death penalty to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Steffen takes a “natural law ethical perspective,” while Cooley takes positions based on the “Pragmatic Principle.”
