Potato field day set for Aug. 20

NDSU and University of Minnesota potato research will be highlighted during the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association field day scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20. 

This year, the field day tour will travel to three locations. The day will begin at 7 a.m. with breakfast at Hoverson Farms near Larimore, North Dakota. Lunch and research presentations will be at the Forest River Colony near Inkster, North Dakota at noon. The last stop will be at Oberg Farms near Hoople, North Dakota starting at 5 p.m. The final stop will include research presentations and an evening barbecue.

Field day topics include:

* NDSU potato breeding, selection and cultivar development, cultivar-specific management, and fresh market and chip processing selections

* Non-neonicotinoid alternatives for Colorado potato beetle control and aphid alert risk maps

* Effects of glyphosate plus dicamba on potatoes

* Potato disease management and late blight and seed treatment trials

* Potato storage research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's potato research worksite

* Red and yellow potato variety trials

* Slow-release phosphorus studies

The work addresses potato breeding, nutrient management, diseases and insect and weed pests.
