Black History Month events scheduled at NDSU

In celebration of Black History Month, the NDSU Office of Multicultural Programs is sponsoring two events featuring Lecia Brooks, outreach director from the Southern Poverty Law Center, on Thursday, Feb. 11.

The center, known as SPLC, was founded in 1971. It is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to fighting discrimination, hate and intolerance through education and litigation. The organization has worked on issues such as human rights abuses, accessibility to quality public education and mental health services, hate groups, mass incarceration, reforming the juvenile justice system and LGBT rights. The center's headquarters are in Montgomery, Alabama.

Brooks is scheduled to present "Perspectives for a Diverse America" at noon in the Memorial Union Meadow Lark room.

Later in the day, she is set to present "SPLC: Teaching Tolerance, Fighting Hate and Seeking Justice" at 5 p.m. in Beckwith Concert Hall.

Following the talks, students will have an opportunity join a new SPLC student organization in Fargo-Moorhead.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
