NDSU’s next Science Café will examine the geological record to discover how life formed on earth.

Lydia S. Tackett, NDSU assistant professor of geology, is scheduled to present "Earth’s Primordial Soup: How Volcanoes and Bacterial Waste Led to Life as We Know It" Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in Stoker’s Basement, Hotel Donaldson, 101 N. Broadway.

According to Tackett, a timeline of major events in the history of life on Earth can be constructed using isotopic and mineralogical proxies, in addition to microfossils.

"We will review the origin and nature of the early atmosphere and oceans, the earliest known life on Earth, the Great Oxygenation Event, Snowball Earth and life after the Cambrian Explosion," Tackett said.
