The North Dakota Curriculum Initiative has scheduled a “Science and Mathematics” conference, featuring two concurrent sessions, on March 30-31 at the Radisson Hotel in Bismarck, N.D.

“Engaging Students Mathematically K-12: How can Teachers Motivate Students to Learn Mathematics?” will investigate the research associated with how students learn mathematics and strategies to help students and parents understand the importance of mathematics. Participants will gain insights into how the classroom environment impacts student learning and learn strategies to motivate students.

Anne Tweed, principal science consultant at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning and North Dakota liaison for the North Central Comprehensive Center will present “Inquiry Science Instruction: How can we make our lessons more inquiry based?” The session will explore inquiry-based learning, which engages students, promotes teamwork and prepares students to successfully defend findings.

One graduate credit (pending) will be made available by attending both days of the conference. The credit, with a cost of $50, will be through NDSU. A copy of the syllabus will be available at the conference.

The North Dakota Curriculum Initiative is funded by a grant from the Department of Public Instruction through NDSU’s School of Education.
