New York City-based artist Jari Chevalier has a traveling solo exhibition on display at the NDSU Memorial Union Gallery. The show, titled “Mathematics of Ecstasy,” features mixed media collage inlays from 2003-08 and will run through Sunday, Apr. 18.

The 24 inlaid collages include symbols such as mandalas, cosmic eggs and concentric circles. Chevalier says she incorporates these symbols "to illustrate the mystical dimension of the living world in relation to contemporary scientific and technological advancements.”

“As scientists probe more deeply into matter, biological systems and outer space using technologically advanced instruments such as particle accelerators, X-rays, MRIs (magnetic resonance images), artificial intelligence, satellites, massive telescopes and space probes, these deeper, closer looks into reality reveal even greater mysteries and causes for awe,” she said.

The exhibition is sponsored by the North Dakota Art Gallery Association and is supported, in part, by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

An opening reception is planned for Thursday, Feb. 26, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to public. The gallery is located above the NDSU Bookstore in the Memorial Union.
