The NDSU Printmaking Education and Research Studio, known as PEARS, is set to host its 14th summer printmaking workshop. “Modular Matrix: Letterpress and the Page” is scheduled June 6-17 in Renaissance Hall 314.

Denise Bookwalter of Tallahassee, Florida, will be the featured guest artist. Her recent research threads include vintage knitting patterns, origami and the experimental machines of early aviation pioneers.

During the first week of the workshop, Bookwalter will present traditional and experimental approaches to letterpress printing using a modular matrix. Students will be introduced to the basics of printing on the Vandercook Proof Press. They will learn how to make polymer plates and laser cut wood blocks that will be used to print the pages of a collaborative artists’ book. Additional one-page binding structures will be introduced for experimentation and individual projects.

During the second week, participants will work with Kent Kapplinger, NDSU professor of art, to create a collaborative artists’ book.

No previous printmaking knowledge is necessary. Registration is available online.
