Lawrence P. Reynolds, University Distinguished Professor of animal sciences, will be honored with a Fellow Award-Research by the American Society of Animal Science. He will be recognized during the joint annual meeting of the organization, American Dairy Science Association, Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science and the Canadian Society of Animal Science scheduled for July 19-23 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Reynolds, who is director of NDSU’s Center for Nutrition and Pregnancy, was notified of the honor by Debra K. Aaron, chair of the society’s Fellows Award Committee and professor of animal and food sciences at the University of Kentucky.
The award recognizes persons for distinguished service to the animal industry and recipients must have been continuous members of the society for a minimum of 25 years.
“Congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award,” Aaron wrote, noting Reynolds was nominated by David Buchanan, associate dean for academic programs in the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources.
“I am very honored,” Reynolds said. “A maximum of 10 fellows are awarded each year. The average is around five for a society which currently has around 1,500 members.”
Reynolds said the society is 108 years old and only about 500 members have been recognized as fellows.
Reynolds’ internationally known research program focuses on improving fertility and pregnancy outcomes in livestock. Reynolds, who has given keynote speeches throughout the world, has chaired or served on more than 50 federal grant-review panels for the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture.
He has taught more than 20 undergraduate and graduate courses in cell biology, endocrinology, growth biology and reproductive biology. He has mentored numerous research interns, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists. Reynolds also is co-director of the Frontiers in Reproduction advanced summer course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
His other honors include the American Society of Animal Science’s Animal Growth and Development Award, the society’s Animal Physiology and Endocrinology Award, NDSU’s Eugene R. Dahl Excellence in Research Award and the 51st NDSU Faculty Lectureship.
