Research Extension Centers to host cover crops workshops

NDSU’s Dickinson Research Extension Center and Central Grasslands Research Extension Center at Streeter, North Dakota, are scheduled to host cover crops workshops on Aug. 18 and 19, respectively.

Ryan Buetow, Dickinson area Extension cropping systems specialist, and Fara Brummer, Central Grasslands area Extension livestock systems specialist, are coordinating the programs at the respective sites.

The Dickinson workshop will feature a demonstration of cover crop work by the center on property west of the new CHI St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson.

The featured topic at the Central Grasslands workshop will be cover crops inter-seeded with corn and dwarf sorghum variety plots.

Marisol Berti, a professor in NDSU’s Department of Plant Sciences, is the keynote speaker at both workshops. Berti, the lead researcher on a recently announced $2 million U.S. Department of Agriculture cover crops research project, will discuss the benefits of cover crops.

"This is part of a commitment by the centers to host numerous small workshops for producers to learn more about research being done in their area," said Buetow. "Cover crops are important for soil health, and these workshops will be an opportunity to see different crops and methods being used."

The workshops are free.
