The new aquatics addition to NDSU’s Wallman Wellness Center is rapidly nearing completion. An opening date is tentatively planned for Monday, Sept. 19.

“This is an exciting time for NDSU students,” said Jobey Lichtblau, Wallman Wellness Center director. “We are very pleased with the new aquatic addition, and look forward to providing students with new opportunities in recreation through a variety of aquatic programs. The aquatic addition will appeal to all students based on the design and amenities available.”

The structure’s exterior brick is almost done, the parking lot is open and the 18th Street entrance is available for use. “Contractors are finishing the siding, soffit, landscaping and the sidewalk,” said Mike Ellingson, facilities management director.

“The water chemistry is being adjusted to meet the codes established by Cass County Public Health,” Ellingson said. “The interior is substantially complete with final cleaning under way and punch-list items being addressed.”

The space remains closed until construction is completed and proper signage is posted in all activity areas.

The $11 million project is entirely student funded. Students voted in spring 2013 to approve construction and bond financing through student fees. Those fees increased this fall to support operation of the facility. “Two students were members on the building committee, providing input for what features and characteristics were wanted in the addition,” Ellingson said. “The space is very flexible and that should fill a missing student attraction on campus.”

The project includes a leisure pool, lap pool, sauna, fire pit, a “wet classroom” for activities such as scuba instruction, gender-neutral locker rooms and additional women’s and men’s locker rooms.

A total of 40 certified lifeguards have been hired, and they’ll receive additional training specific to the new facility before the pools open.

“We are very excited to see students using everything aquatics has to offer,” said Ryan MacMaster, aquatics coordinator. “Our top priority will always be to provide a safe, friendly, fun and clean environment for all students.”

The Wallman Wellness Center was built in 2001, with an earlier addition completed in 2007. The center also houses the Student Health Service, Disability Services and Child Care Service.
