Sociologist to give NDSU presentation

Award-winning sociologist, historian and author James Loewen is scheduled to present “Lies My Teacher Told Me” Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. at NDSU’s Gate City Auditorium.

Loewen is best known for writing “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong” which has sold more than 1.5 million copies.

Loewen is widely recognized for inspiring history teachers to change the way U.S. history is taught. He has been an expert witness in more than 50 civil rights, voting rights and employment cases.

In 2012, Loewen received the “Spirit of America Award” from the National Council for the Social Studies, a prestigious award previously presented to Jimmy Carter, Rosa Parks and Mr. Rogers.

The NDSU Bookstore will have copies of Loewen’s books for sale during the event. He will be available for book-signing.

The presentation is sponsored by the NDSU College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Department of Residence Life; Memorial Union, the Office of Women and Gender Diversity; and the City of Fargo’s Native American Commission.
