NDSU has received "Tree Campus USA" designation from the Arbor Day Foundation for the fifth straight year. The national program honors institutions for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in conservation efforts.

"Trees are a vital part to enriching the environment the students need for a healthy learning atmosphere," said Michael Ellingson, director of Facilities Management. "Receiving this award again shows the commitment Facilities Management has toward the mission of the campus.”

To be considered for the honor, NDSU met the five standards for sustainable campus forestry. The university has established a tree advisory committee, presented evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated expenditures for its tree program, holds an Arbor Day observance and sponsors student service-learning projects.

"Your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at NDSU contributes to a healthier, more sustainable world for us all," wrote May Sweeney, program manager for the Arbor Day Foundation, in a Feb. 2 letter acknowledging the award.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation and education organization that aims to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. It created the Tree Campus USA national program in 2008.
