NDSU student newspaper earns awards

The Spectrum student newspaper received two awards March 5 at the annual Associated Collegiate Press midwinter conference. Schools from across the U.S. and Canada were represented.

The newspaper placed first in the special edition category and won third in the website (large school) category. The Spectrum’s sex and romance special edition was published the Monday before Valentine’s Day.

“As an English education major, I’ve preached to my staff a process-over-product mantra all school year,” said Benjamin Norman, editor-in-chief. “But it’s nice to have our product recognized. I’m beyond proud of my staff and this newspaper.”

The Spectrum consists of dozens of writers, 13 editors and four business staff, all of whom are students. An office manager and adviser oversee production.

The recognition follows the Spectrum’s success at the regional level. Last month in Minneapolis, 12 of the publication’s 15 submissions placed — including five top-three finishes.

“These awards really prove how hard-working our staff is,” said Jack Hastings, managing editor. “We get used to the grind of producing content twice a week, which can get to be draining, so it’s incredible to see our work appreciated at an international level.”

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
