Biological sciences professor teaches sewing camp

Wendy Reed, professor of biological sciences, recently taught two sessions of “Nature Inspired Sewing Camp” for children at Fargo fabric shop Modern Textiles.

The sessions highlighted ways to use patterns and designs found in nature as inspiration for designs. Participants used fabric stamped and painted with nature prints for science-inspired projects. Projects included bags, nature journals and wall art.

Reed, the head of the biological sciences department, joined NDSU in 2002. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Kalamazoo College in Michigan and her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from Iowa State University, Ames.

She is an ADVANCE FORWARD steering committee member, and an advocate and mentor regarding the retention and advancement of women faculty. Her area of research is physiological and evolutionary ecology, studying how mothers affect the health and growth of their young through nutritional and hormone investments made during development.
