An upcoming speaker for the Capitalism and Society Lecture Series will discuss the economics of Walmart. The event is free and open to the public.

Art Carden, professor of economics at Samford University’s Brock School of Business in Birmingham, Alabama, is scheduled to present “Waltonomics: Walmart and Society” Friday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 pm. in the AgCountry Auditorium at Barry Hall.

The Capitalism and Society Lecture Series is hosted by the NDSU Center for the Study of Public Choice and Private Enterprise.

Carden will address the impact of Walmart on the economy and the communities where it does business. He says the evidence suggests that Walmart makes people, especially the less advantaged, better off.

After the lecture, there will be a short session for questions and answers, followed by pizza and refreshments in the Barry Hall Atrium.

Carden’s research has appeared in the Journal of Urban Economics, Southern Economic Journal, Public Choice and Contemporary Economic Policy. He has also published commentaries in Forbes, USA Today, the Washington Examiner and a range of regional and national publications. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama and his doctorate in economics from Washington University in St. Louis.
