Faculty receive major grant for diabetes research

The NDSU Department of Public Health and Department of Computer Science received a four-year $988,114 National Science Foundation grant for diabetes research.

The departments will work to build a mobile application that will connect blood glucose, blood pressure and physical activity data of diabetes patients directly to health care providers. Text messaging will be used for diabetes case management, care coordination and improved communication with patients. The Minnesota Lower Sioux Tribe will be the test site for the research.

Juan Li and Jun Kong, associate professors of computer science, are the principal investigators on the grant. Siobhan Wescott, assistant professor of public health, and Donald Warne, professor and chair of public health, also are investigators on the grant.

“This is the first collaboration between public health and computer science,” said Warne. “It is a significant step forward in establishing a stronger base of interdisciplinary research at NDSU.”

The National Science Foundation grant number is 1722913.
