NDSU to hold math day for high school women

The NDSU Department of Mathematics is set to host the 21st annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics High School Day is a program of mathematics activities, games and career information for young women in grades 9-12. Participants will meet the NDSU mathematics faculty, professional women from the Fargo area who use math in their careers and other high school students who are interested in math.

Women make up about half the workforce but are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, occupations. That means the nation is missing out on the creativity and innovation of women who could be working in fields, such as health care, engineering and information technology. The goal of Sonia Kovalesvsky Day is to encourage young women to continue studying math and to pursue careers in STEM disciplines.

The program is supported by the NDSU Department of Mathematics, the NDSU College of Science and Mathematics, the NDSU School of Education, the NDSU Bookstore, Sanford Health and Microsoft.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
