Welcoming Week Fargo-Moorhead is Sept. 14-24, and NDSU employees and students plan to be actively engaged during the 10 days of events.

The local activities are based on National Welcoming Week, where “communities bring together immigrants and U.S.-born residents to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone, including New Americans.”

NDSU employees and students are involved in the following Fargo-Moorhead events.

Saturday, Sept. 16: Welcoming Day

Red River Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Megan Myrdal, Cass County Extension agent, organized the opportunity for the community to taste foods from around the world at the Red River Market. Locally produced food will be available as well as an array of world cuisine from Fargo-Moorhead restaurants.

Sunday, Sept. 17: World in Fargo-Moorhead Gallery Talk

Fargo Public Library, 4 p.m.

Ibtissem Belmihoub, English doctoral student, organized the event focused on the World in Fargo-Moorhead, photos and stories about people from around the world who have made Fargo-Moorhead their home. The content is published on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The talk will share the history of the project, introduce photographers and storytellers, and invite further participation. An exhibit will run through September.

Tuesday, Sept. 19: “Green Card Youth Voice” reading

NDSU Library, 3:30 p.m.

Muhend Abakar, a freshman majoring in industrial engineering and management, will read his immigration story. He was born in Sudan, lived in Egypt as a child and moved to Fargo as a teenager.

Wednesday, Sept. 20: English Language Tutors Volunteer Orientation

Fargo Public Library, 7 p.m.

Kevin Brooks, professor of English, will host an event for community members who are interested in English language tutor volunteer opportunities. The orientation will help match volunteers’ interests and schedules with organizations that need their services.

Organizations include the Giving + Learning program, which Brooks directs, the Fargo Adult Learning Center, Afro-American Development Association and African Initiative for Progress.

Sunday, Sept. 24: World Café at the World Gardens

Rabanus Park, 1 to 4 p.m.

Brooks will host what he describes as a giant picnic serving traditional cuisine from countries, such as Liberia, South Sudan, Somalia and Nepal. The event will include a photo booth and speed friending.
