NDSU graduate student receives grant for astronaut research

An NDSU graduate student received a $3,000 Space Grant Fellowship Award for his astronaut research from the North Dakota Space Grant Consortium.

Sean Mahoney, master’s student in the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Science, studies leg blood flow restriction during low-intensity rowing exercise.

“We are looking to see if leg blood flow restriction has any merit as a potential countermeasure to the microgravity induced deconditioning that astronauts experience during long duration spaceflight missions,” said Mahoney, who is from White Bear Lake, Minnesota. “This award will compensate me for my time working on and completing the research project.”

The main objective of the North Dakota Space Grant Consortium to prepare students for careers that support NASA’s goals and the workforce development needs of North Dakota.
