The NDSU College of Engineering Distinguished Lecture Series will host a leading authority on quality and reliability engineering.
E.A. Elsayed, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rutgers University, is scheduled to present “Equivalency of Reliability Estimation and Testing Plans” on Monday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Union’s Hidatsa room.
Elsayed will examine the equivalency of test plans for Accelerated Life Testing plans, known as ALT. The method is designed to obtain failure observations in a short time by subjecting test units to severer than normal operating conditions. He’ll demonstrate constant-stress ALT and ramp-stress ALT, and investigate their equivalency.
Elsayed, who was department chair from 1983 to 2001, is also the director of the National Science Foundation/Industry/University Co-operative Research Center for Quality and Reliability Engineering.
His research interests are in the areas of quality and reliability engineering and production planning and control. He is a co-author of “Quality Engineering in Production Systems,” published by McGraw Hill Book Co. He also wrote “Reliability Engineering,” published by Addison-Wesley. The books received the 1990 and 1997 IIE Joint Publishers Book-of-the-Year Award, respectively. His book, “Reliability Engineering 2nd Edition,” published by Wiley, was recognized as the 2013 Outstanding IIE Publication.
Elsayed has been a consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories, Ingersoll-Rand, Johnson & Johnson, Personal Products, AT&T Communications and other companies. He served on the National Academy of Science panel on Reliability Growth and was the editor-in-chief of IIE Transactions and editor of the IIE Transactions on Quality and Reliability Engineering from 1996-2000. He also is editor of the International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering.
His many honors include the Rutgers University Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research, Institute of Industrial Engineers’ David F. Baker Research Award, IISE fellow Award, American Society of Mechanical Engineers fellow, Senior Fulbright Award and the 2011 Thomas Alva Edison Award for U.S. Patent 7,115,089 B2.
