Plant sciences professor honored

North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has named Rodney Lym, NDSU professor of plant sciences and associate department head, as the recipient of the 2018 Weed Control Partner Award.

“Dr. Lym has provided consultation to the North Dakota Department of Agriculture for many years,” Goehring said. “He has been a valuable resource for the latest research and information on noxious and invasive weeds and I thank him for his tireless efforts.”

Lym has been employed at NDSU since 1979. His research has included control of invasive weeds with an emphasis on leafy spurge, Canada thistle and toadflax. His research also focused on integration of herbicide treatments with other control options, such as tillage and reseeding, biological control and grazing with sheep and goats. He has developed many publications used for education and awareness efforts of noxious weeds.

Lym also has held multiple officer positions and is an active member of several professional groups, including the Weed Science Society of America, Western Society of Weed Science and the Society for Range Management.

Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Tom Bodine presented the award to Lym on Jan. 9, during the 2018 Commissioner’s Noxious Weed Forum in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Lym attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and earned his doctorate in agronomy from the University of Wyoming.
