Richard Horsley, professor and department head of plant sciences, taught a short course for field and laboratory researchers to refresh their knowledge of statistics and experimental design. The course, Introduction to Statistical Experimental Design, was held Jan. 16-18.

Twenty-seven researchers from universities and industry attended the three-day course. Topics covered included a statistical review, experiment planning, hypothesis testing, mean comparison tests, regression, correlation and several common experimental designs. Participants who work as crop advisers, agronomists and soil scientists received continuing education units.

Horsley has taught the graduate level course in experimental design yearly since 1987. The short course was offered in 2008, 2010 and 2013, and will be offered again in the future.
