Donna Grandbois, assistant professor in the Department of Nursing, and Greg Sanders, associate dean in the College of Human Development and Education, will have their article titled “The Resilience of Native American Elders” published in the September issue of the journal Issues in Mental Health Nursing.

The article is unique in scientific literature because it focuses on strengths and resilience of American Indian elders from their perspective and is expressed in excerpts taken from their stories. The authors sought to give voice to the study participants by using an interpretive qualitative methodology that is built on the cultural strengths of storytelling.

Grandbois is an indigenous researcher who gathered the data from four different tribal groups in a four-state area. She earned her doctoral degree in gerontology from the College of Human Development and Education at NDSU. Her master’s degree is in mental health nursing.

Grandbois and Sanders also will publish “A perspective of American Indian/Alaska Native Nurses.” The article is co-written by Randi C. Madison-Jacobs, who is an Alaska native who directs the BRANN Program, a recruitment and retention program for Alaska Native nursing students at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
