Ana Magallanes-López, a master’s student in NDSU’s cereal science graduate program, won the “People’s Choice Award” for the best poster at the 2018 NC-213 U.S. Quality Grains Research Consortium annual meeting. The meeting was held Feb. 21-22 in Kansas City, Missouri, concurrently with the Wheat Quality Council annual meeting. Students attending the meeting exhibited research posters and Wheat Quality Council industry members cast their vote for the best poster.

Magallanes López’s poster was “Wet Milling Affects Deoxynivalenol Concentration in Wheat Starch and Gluten.” Her research examines the wet milling technique applied to DON contaminated durum and hard red spring wheat grain and how this technique affects the concentration of DON in the final extracted starch and gluten.

Her adviser, Senay Simsek, Bert L. D'Appolonia Cereal Science and Technology of Wheat Endowed Associate Professor, and Frank Manthey, cereal science graduate program coordinator and professor of durum and pasta quality, were co-authors on the poster.

NC-213 is a multi-state research project comprised of engineers, scientists and economists from U.S. land-grant universities, government research centers and industry who conduct research to create technical knowledge needed to manage grain quality and food security in world markets.
