Noted attorney to speak at Amlund Speaker Series

The 2018 Curtis Amlund Speaker series event is set for Tuesday, May 1, at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Family Life Center building’s room 124.

The scheduled speaker is Bismarck, North Dakota, attorney Tom Dickson. He represented members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa who sued North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger in 2016 claiming recently-passed voter identification laws were unconstitutional and discriminatory.

A federal judge ruled in favor of tribal members, blocking the North Dakota voter identification law. A 2018 challenge to a revised voter ID law was also successful.

Dickson will discuss the controversial subject of voter identification, as well as his role in the ongoing cases.

The Curtis Amlund Speaker series is sponsored by the political science discipline within NDSU’s Department of Criminal Justice and Political Science.
