Service project gives hands-on experience for NDSU students

NDSU architecture and landscape architecture students are lending a hand to six area nonprofit organizations through a special service-learning project.

The students are taking the “Writing in the Design Professions” upper-division course taught by Julie Sandland, senior lecturer of English. During the past two months, the students worked in groups, conducting field work, interviews and needs assessments to redesign space for the organizations.

“Their design proposals have included research, discussion and renderings, and will be donated to the agencies,” Sandland explained. “Students have gained real-world experience in listening to clients’ needs, creatively working on a solution to a problem and in advocating for a nonprofit through pro bono work.”

A design poster reception is scheduled on Monday, April 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the NDSU Memorial Union Art Gallery. The students will give brief presentations about their design projects and respond to questions or comments.

“The nonprofits have been excited to work with these students, offering them access to the space and budget information, answering questions, and being receptive to their ideas,” Sandland said. “Design of spaces, including the built environment and landscapes, is key to what these students will be expected to do in their careers. This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students.”

The students worked with these organizations:

• F-M Community Theater

• Homeward Animal Shelter

• F-M Emergency Food Pantry

• Moorhead Public Library

• PAAWS

• Gladys Ray Shelter
