Kelly A. Rusch, vice president of the Office of Research and Creative Activity, has named NDSU professor and interim attending veterinarian Dr. Neil Dyer as attending veterinarian.

Dyer has been involved with animal care at NDSU since 1995, when he joined the veterinary diagnostic laboratory working under campus veterinarian Herb Smith. He served as director of the lab for 20 years before stepping down at the end of 2016. Dyer has been involved in the regulatory aspects of animal research in a variety of capacities at NDSU, including part-time and backup attending veterinarian, chair of the NDSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and, most recently, as interim attending veterinarian for the past nine months.

“I enjoy working with our researchers and helping them be successful in their activities,” said Dyer. “With any animal research, the regulatory burden can be heavy at times and I gain satisfaction by helping researchers navigate the requirements and streamline their processes while remaining compliant.”

“Given his knowledge, experience and years of service at NDSU, Neil is the perfect person for this role,” Rusch said. “He is well-known and respected by everyone at NDSU and his knowledge of both large and small animal research protocols is unmatched.”

Dyer is a Bismarck, North Dakota, native who earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology from NDSU and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and master’s degree in veterinary pathology from Iowa State University. He has experience in exotic, small animal and mixed animal practices and has served as a track veterinarian, taught courses in animal health, worked as diagnostic pathologist and facilitated animal care and use at NDSU.
