The landscape architecture program, within the Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, has added a five-year master’s degree. The program will be launched this fall and will replace the current five-year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree program, which will end by 2021.

Students enrolled in the new program begin as pre-landscape architecture students in their freshman year and, after completing preparatory courses, may apply for full admission to the professional program in their sophomore year. The professional program includes a range of coursework intended to prepare graduates for entry into the profession of landscape architecture. 

“This move better aligns us with the architecture program, which also offers a five-year master’s degree, and this will provide our students more opportunities to interact with all faculty members in our department,” said Matt Kirkwood, associate professor and landscape architecture program director. “The new program also will provide students with the only accredited MLA program in the region and one of the most affordable programs of its kind in the nation.”

Landscape architects provide a wide variety of professional services to individuals, organizations, corporations and government agencies. They are involved in all phases of the development of a site and their duties include site planning and design, site engineering, management and supervision.

The NDSU landscape architecture program provides outstanding professional education with a strong regional focus that fosters understanding of the global context of the discipline. The program aims to prepare students for innovative professional practice and for advanced graduate education in the discipline.

The new master of landscape architecture program requires an accreditation visit by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board in the fall of 2019.
