NDSU counselor education student coordinates national conference

Julie Smith, an NDSU doctoral student in counselor education and supervision, coordinated her second national cultural emersion conference for counselors.

The White Earth Reservation Educational Institute was held Aug. 11 -17 on the White Earth Indian Reservation. The National Board of Certified Counselors International put on the event with the help of Smith’s coordination and 25 nationally certified counselors.

“The event creates opportunities for nationally certified counselors to get a good understanding of life on the reservation,” said Smith, who comes from the White Earth Nation.

This is the organization’s second cultural institute in the United States. Past events have been held in Africa and Europe.

“The counselor education faculty at NDSU were honored to support Julie and the student minority fellows in this important cultural exchange and opportunity to learn and grow,” said Brenda Hall, NDSU professor and counselor education program coordinator.

Smith is set to graduate in December with her doctorate in counselor education and supervision. She accepted a faculty position at Arkansas State University.
