Book discussion about race set for NDSU

A discussion of the book, “Not My Idea: A Book about Whiteness,” by local feminist author and publisher Jennifer Baumgardner, is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20, at 12:30 p.m. in the NDSU Memorial Union Hidatsa room.

The discussion will feature Baumgardner and Anastasia Higginbotham, author of children’s book series, “Ordinary Terrible Things.“

The presentation is free and open to faculty, staff, students and the public.

Conversations about whiteness are happening in the media, on college campuses, and in schools and religious communities nationwide. “Not My Idea” invites families to acknowledge the ways white children are conditioned to feel apart from conversations about race. Inspired by her children’s curiosity, Higginbotham sets the story in present day America where a white child sees news coverage of a police shooting. The child asks questions of their family, but finds answers at a library.
