The NDSU Department of Mathematics is scheduled to host the 22nd annual Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics High School Day on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

The event features mathematics activities, games and career information for young women in grades 9-12. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

“The Sonia Kovalevsky Day is the flagship outreach activity for the mathematics department, and it is currently in its 22nd year,” explained Maria Alfonseca, associate professor of mathematics and event co-organizer. “It provides a unique opportunity for high school girls to find out about the many applications of mathematics in fields such as medicine, finance, aviation, cybersecurity and city planning, and to meet professional women from Fargo-Moorhead who do actual work in these areas. This is particularly important for small enrollment high school students, who may not have such female role models in their hometowns.”

Event co-organizer Jessica Striker, assistant professor of mathematics, said, “The students will explore intriguing mathematical concepts and applications through hands-on workshops. Our aim is that participants will gain a better understanding of the beauty and utility of math, and come away with an increased desire to pursue a career in a STEM field.”

The program is supported by the NDSU Department of Mathematics, NDSU College of Science and Mathematics, ND EPSCoR, NDSU Bookstore and Sanford Health.
