The Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute awarded several scholarships during its 23rd annual awards banquet Oct. 4.

Student recipients included:

• Shelby Rose Hartwig – Paul E.R. Abrahamson Transportation Scholarship

Hartwig is a senior in agricultural economics from Albany, Minnesota. She is treasurer and ag education co-chair of the NDSU chapter of the Sigma Alpha professional agriculture sorority. She also is treasurer of the NDSU Agriculture Collective. She is the daughter of Michael and Lynda Hartwig of Albany.

• Marc Michaelson – Paul E.R. Abrahamson Transportation Scholarship

Marc Michaelson is a junior majoring in theatre arts and creative writing from Dickinson, North Dakota. He is vice chair of the Newfangled Theatre Company at NDSU. He is the son of David and Shallimar Michaelson of Dickinson.

• Sarah B. Irmen – Charles E. Herman Scholarship

Irmen is from Fargo and is a senior in civil engineering. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and served as chair of the TechGirls program. Her parents are Mitch and Heidi Irmen of Fargo.

• Jenna Ruth Lee – Transportation Engineering Scholarship

Lee is a senior majoring in civil engineering from Bemidji, Minnesota. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, Phi Eta Sigma honor society, Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, Golden Key International Honour Society and Chi Alpha campus ministries.Her parents are Bryan and Dana Lee of Bemidji.

• Alicia Lorig– Transportation Engineering Scholarship

Lorig is a senior in civil engineering from Jamestown, North Dakota. She is active in the Institute of Transportation Engineers and participated in the organization’s 2018 Traffic Bowl competition for college students. Her parents are Jon and Jane Lorig of Jamestown.

• Josiah Anthonie Herrera – Tribal Transportation Scholarship

Herrera is a freshman majoring in industrial engineering and management. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for JDS Construction in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the past three years. His parents are Eliezer and Monica Rivera.

The Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute is a research, education, and outreach center at NDSU guided, in part, by an advisory council composed of representatives of various organizations, industries and agencies related to transportation.
